Hard water in Florida is not a statewide story. The peninsula is mostly softer than the rest of the country. Polk County is the part that is not. Lakeland, Winter Haven, Auburndale, Bartow, and a lot of Plant City pull from the Floridan Aquifer. That water ran through limestone. Calcium comes with it.

The numbers Lakeland already published
City of Lakeland Water Utilities reported finished water hardness of 108 mg/L at the Combee plant and 126 mg/L at the Williams plant in its 2023 figures. That is roughly 6 to 7.5 grains per gallon. The city draws from wells about 750 feet into the aquifer.
We did not invent those numbers. They are already on our plumber in Lakeland page. A private well around Kathleen, Gibsonia, or the rural edge of Plant City will not match the city plants. Only a test at your tap gives you that house’s number.
Winter Haven, Auburndale, and Bartow sit on the same limestone. The crust on the shower head looks the same.
What hard water does inside a Polk County house
Scale builds where water heats or sprays through a small opening.
The water heater takes the worst of it. Minerals drop on the tank bottom and coat the element. The unit works harder, recovery slows, and it starts to rumble. A flush often quiets that. Water weeping from the tank body is corrosion. That is a replacement conversation on water heater installation, not a patch.
Faucet cartridges and aerators clog. Shower heads spray sideways. The dishwasher leaves a film. Supply lines narrow over years, which is how a house that used to have decent pressure starts feeling weak at every fixture.
None of that is a mystery leak. If the meter is spinning with every tap closed, that is a different job: leak detection in Lakeland.
Softener, salt-free, or just a heater flush
A water softener swaps the calcium and magnesium for sodium. That is the install that stops new scale. It does not dissolve a decade of crust already in the pipes.
A salt-free conditioner treats scale without the ion exchange. It is the option when someone in the house cannot have the extra sodium. It is not the same as a softener, and we will not sell it as one.
Iron staining or a rotten-egg smell on a Plant City well is a different treatment. A softener alone will not fix that. We test, then recommend.
If the heater is under eight years old and only noisy, start with a flush and a look at the anode. Past ten, do the arithmetic before you spend on parts. Most repairs we list fall between $150 and $500. That band is already on the repair page.
